Nederland Sustainability Project

What is Nederland Sustainability Project?

NSP was founded in 2006 with the goal to localize community resources. In developing a strategy for Nederland, we have determined that a large “energy crisis” facing Nederland is the outsourcing of our mountain food supply. Very little food is produced locally in Nederland or surrounding mountain towns. Most produce consumed in Nederland travels an average of 1,000 miles to reach our plates.

By growing our food locally, we can reduce thousands of pounds of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere every year as well as provide our residents with fresh, affordable produce. This said, the mission of NSP is to localize community foods. We plan to accomplish this goal by constructing a large-scale, high-yield greenhouse in Nederland, where mountain gardeners will connect and neighborhood community garden networks will be established, from Jamestown to Idaho Springs.

Mission Statement: The mission of Nederland Sustainability Project is to develop sustainable living practices and localized food systems in mountain area communities. Through gardens, farm sites, educational programs, and support networks, NSP reduces ecological impacts while growing communities from the ground up.
